What is the difference between MP3, MP4, MP5, MP6, MP7 and MP8

Posted by Rodrigo Piccelli on April 22nd, 2008

I was talking to my friend just about the players that are sold there, then did a search to try to understand what is the difference between the MPX life, I found this very interesting post that I am reproducing in its entirety, it helps to understand a little when choosing what to buy and "because" these names:

MP3: MP3 is the format of audio compression that caused a revolution. Audio files can be converted to MP3, with little loss of quality (the "ordinary" people and I can not tell the difference), occupying only about 10% of storage space needed for digital audio CD.

What is commonly called the "MP3" or "MP3 player" are those pen-drives that play music and FM radio tune.

MP4: MPEG4 is a standard for video compression, which resulted in the same industry that the MP3 revolution. Thanks to MPEG4 movie an hour and a half, in the DVD format takes up nearly 5GB of space, can be placed in a simple 700MB CD, with little loss of image quality. The soundtrack on MP3, not enough to be relevant in terms of file size, in this case.

The "MP4" is the industry's version of "MP3" up with a small screen LCD, capable of playing videos.

MP5: now beginning to enter the area to believe that the absurdity of the lumber industry. Whereas MP is short for MPEG, Moving Picture Expert Group, would not fit anyone but himself MPEG create new standards and classifications. However, there have already created the "MP5", which is nothing more than the same MP4 described above, but with integrated digital camera capable of taking pictures and in some cases also shoot.

MP6: talk of MP5 to refer to a player with MPEG4 video camera and FM radio now seems absurd to talk about MP6 then is the height. It phonebooks and commitments, Internet access, run programs and games in Java, send and receive e-mails.

MP7: must have the same functions of mp6 and receives signals from TV and record programs of the Sky!

MP8: the MP8 soon to come with a toothbrush, coffee maker and heart monitor, weighing less than 100g.
